China is the world’s largest compressor market and production base for air conditioning and refrigeration applications. As such, market performance in China impacts the global compressor industry.
In 2015, China maintained the leading position around the world in terms of production and consumption of rotary compressors; however, it also showed negative growth-for the first time both in production and sales volumes. The 2015 market volume of rotary compressors came to 95.7 million units in China, falling 13.0% year on year.
Several years ago, China saw overinvestment in rotary compressor factories, which consequently led to excess production capacity. It is estimated that total production capacity in China is now 200 million units. Compared with the previous year, the Chinese air conditioning market fell 8.7% in 2015, which was the largest contraction in recent years. Huge inventory pileups of air conditioners impeded compressor manufacturers’ production schedules in 2016, causing some chaos in the supply chain. Air conditioner manufacturers are taking steps to adjust their business strategy along with their compressor strategy to maintain export growth while also investing in overseas markets.
