* Indonesia is the largest air conditioner market in Southeast Asia
With an estimated market size of 2 million units in 2012, Indonesia is the largest air conditioner market in Southeast Asia This market is steadily expanding, with growth of 20% or more expected for the next several years. Year-on-year growth of 24% was recorded in 2012.

1. Which Direction Should Refrigerants Take? Special Update on EU F-gas Regulation
Europe has been a leader in enacting progressive environmental policy. Now, according to a vote on draft legislation by ENVI on June 19, the use of fluorinated gases should be banned in air conditioning appliances and refrigerators by 2020. If this F-gas ban is enforced as a regulation, it will significantly impact markets not only in Europe, but also in the United States, Japan, China, and emerging countries.

2. Age of Inverter Air Conditioners
Energy-saving inverter technology enables air conditioning without wasteful, inefficient operation by smoothly varying the speed of the compressor according to thermal load. As such, inverters have been praised as important technology able to contribute to reducing CO2 emissions and therefore global warming. And use of inverter technology is now starting to become widespread in China, the world’s largest air conditioner markets, as well as other markets around the world. In 2012, the percentage of inverter units in the global room air conditioner (RAC) market is estimated to have reached 30%.

3. Samsung, the Market Driven Company
Samsung Electronics’ air conditioner business has been moving ahead in global markets. Donghoon Shin, vice president of the Sales and Marketing Team, Digital Appliances, talked to JARN recently about the company’s developing air conditioner business in the markets of North America, Latin America, CIS, China, and India. Mr. Shin emphasized their operational system that integrates all company functions and Samsung’s strong aspiration to become the market leader.

4. Rechi to Invest in BLDC Motors
Rechi, working together with Taiwan’s China Steel, is planning to set up brushless DC (BLDC) motor manufacturing plants in both Pingdong Export Processing Zone of Taiwan and Humen City of Guangdong Province, Mainland China. The initial production volume is about 500,000 units this year, and will be increased to 2.5 - 3 million units next year, with sales revenue exceeding NT$ 1 billion (US$ 33 million). The target is to increase the annual production volume to 30 million units in five years.

5. Sharp Commences AC Production in India
From May this year, Sharp began producing six models of residential middle- size inverter type air conditioners in India by reconstructing the production subsidiary’s factory in Pune, Maharashtra (hundreds of kilometers from Mumbai). The company intends to produce 100,000 units in 2013 and increase the production capacity to more than 500,000 units in 2016.
